His father was working at Canadian Car & Foundry building airplanes, a job he had started doing near the beginning of WWII in 1941. His father worked very hard to support his family and was incredibly conscientious about spending so they would have money for things they valued, like trips to see family. (as evidenced by the detailed ledger books he kept down to the penny it cost for a loaf of bread) ------His family would often make trips to see their grandparent's farms in the summer months.
