Ida Sophia Mecalson, daughter of Christopher Conrad Michalsen and Johanne G Knudsdatter Krogfoss. Married name: Aarsby, born 15 Oct 1879 Holt Township, Fillmore, Minnesota, United States, died 3 Nov 1969 Calgary, Alberta, Canada, 90 years == Biography ==Ida was the 4th child of Michalsen-4 Christopher Michalsen Krogfoss-8 Johanna Krogfoss. She was born in 1879 in Holt Township, Fillmore, Minnesota, United States. Her parents were methodists and her father was a lay preacher. Both of her parents died at the ages of 51 and 52 of cancer. She was 18 when her mother died, and one of her Aunts took over the responsibility of raising the children (the youngest child was 10 years old). story handed down by Aarsby-9 Crystal (Aarsby) Manning, originally from cousin Mildred Livingood when she visited Kelowna pre-1995 The year after her father died she married Jensen Aarsby-1 Martin Jensen Aarsby and they farmed on land near Knox, North Dakota, United States. Their first six children born in North Dakota. Ida and Martin were interested in Christian work and church meetings. A Rev. Beckstrom used to stay at the Aarsby home while holding meetings in that part of the district. He loved children and told the young Aarsby children Bible stories. During the summer there was an annual camp meetings in Devil's Lake, where Martin had two sisters Aarsby-33 Cary and Aarsby-35 Jennie lived. ----Martin decided to move to Alberta, Canada and take up a homestead there. Canada widely promoted available land posters to Americans and to people abroad. Some land was completely free in locations that weren't yet developed, and other land in more populated areas were highly discounted. Martin purchased three South African war scrips and a file on a homestead and pre-emption which gave them two sections of land. He paid $700 each for the scripts. He had all of section 23 and 27, township 29, range 7. However, through some mistake in the land titles office, he lost one script which had to be relocated. She lived on the land six months of each of the years 1913 and 1914. Trainlines were still being developed by the Canadian Pacific Railway, so that when Martin and Ida were ready to move their young family, they needed to also make arrangements to complete their journey by horse and buggy. Their belongings were shipped to Alsask in May 1911. They left from Knox, North Dakota, United States, headed to Chinook, Alberta, Canada. Alsask was the end of the railroad. From there, they proceeded by a wagon that was well loaded. Ida sat at the back of the wagon, holding baby Aarsby-9 Crystal who was a little over 1 year old at the time. They traveled from Regina on a freight train, and lived in Alsask while the wagons were set up. Martin bought a team of oxen and a team of horses and then they traveled four or five days to their new homestead in northeast of Chinook, Alberta, Canada. When they arrived, they pitched tents (a circus tent and a smaller tent) where they lived for the summer. Martin traveled to Castor to buy lumber for their house/shack and a sod barn. The house was one single room built of one ply of boards and covered with tar paper. It had a car roof. Their first winter was very cold with snow piled to the top of the house. On December 25th Martin helped Ida deliver their newest child, Aarsby-10 Martin Everette Aarsby. Her daughter Aarsby-4 Myrtle remembered caring for young Crystal while Ida was ill after the birth of Martin. She would wrap her little sister in a quilt and put her in the rocking chair in front of the open over to keep her warm while she fed her. Myrtle also remembered that the family put up a large USA flag at their residence, and a neighbor reminded them they were in Canada, and the family promptly took it down. family story from Crystal Aarsby, typed and shared with family members before 1995 The young family moved into the shack and it was their home for some time, until the four room house was eventually ready. In 1912 the railroad was complete as far as Calgary, so Ida was able to go to the USA on business. In 1912 they bought another homestead north of Youngstown, Alberta. Ida took a horse and buggy and drove across the country to Castor, about 60 miles, all alone. Then put her horse in a livery barn at Castor and took the train to Calgary to file on the west half of section 17, township 30, about seven miles east of Youngstown. Then she returned by train to Castor and drove home. Clifford J Aarsby, “Mrs Ida Aarsby,” in Youngstown Memories across the Years. a History of Youngstown and Surrounding Communities (Youngstown, Alberta, AB: Youngstown Historical Society, 2017), p. unknown, copy of scanned pages in the possession of Hutton-2752 Loralee Hutton There were ten acres of land with a lovely creek on the farm to break and a minimum of six months homestead duty was required in a year, so Ida and the family would live in a shack there in 1913 and 1914. Martin had 2 sections of land in the Chinook district. He purchased his first tractor in 1913, which he preferred to using horses for farm work. He was very capable when repairing the tractor when needed. There were big crops in 1915 and 1916. In 1917 there was a crop failure and several years of poor crops followed. This was common across the entire prairies and part of what made the great depression so much worse for Canadians. They were already struggling with poverty and unemployment. Her children drove to school just east of Youngstown on the Ed Bignell place. The school was situated where the men's home is now (circa 1985). They drove almost seven miles to school with horse and buggy each day. In 1922 her 17 year old son Aarsby-7 Francis went on a threshing team and contracted typhoid fever while at a house where he ate. He fought hard, but died 3 weeks later. In 1925 Ida and Martin separated and she and her children moved to Carstairs, Alberta and lived in a rented farm. Her 19 year old son Aarsby-8 Vernon was meant to be the chief help with farming, but apparently Ida carried most of the responsibility. Martin remained on the farm in Chinook until the time of his death in 1944. In 1930 Vernon married and had two children. When his wife died in 1940 Ida took on the responsibility of raising the children, who were very young. This 26 page document is titled Modified Register for Martinus Jensen Aarsby, dated 27 Apr 2005. It's unclear where this document originated from Her son Aarsby-12 Lloyd Allen Aarsby developed Spinal Meningitis when he was a teenager and was sick a very long time. He died in a hospital in Calgary in 1934. He was 18 years old. She and her youngest child Aarsby-3 Opal were devoted to each other. Opal didn't really know her father at all, as they had officially separated when she was only 3 years old. Ida raised her alone on the new farm & in many ways she was like a friend and a grandchild at the same time. Friends and family assumed Opal would stay at home with Ida forever, but she met young Hutton-2828 Arthur Hutton she was smitten, and he swept her away to Ontario near the beginning of WWII. Ida left the farm and moved into the city of Carstairs where she rented rooms to borders when family wasn't visiting. A few years prior to her death she moved into the Crossbow nursing home in Calgary were she died 2 weeks after her 90th birthday after being bedfast for a long time. She was laid to rest in the Carstairs Cemetery in 1969 ===About=== Name: ;Ida Sophia Mecalson. Married name: Aarsby, born 19 Jan 1873 Østre Toten, Oppland, Norge, died 20 Nov 1944 Chinook, Alberta, Canada, 71 years == Biography ==Martin Aarsby was born Marthinis Jensen to Jens E Haagensen Aarsby and Mathea (Mary) Pedersdh (Pederson). He immigrated to the USA in 1888 where he homesteaded in North Dakota. In 1908 he applied for a parcel of land near Edmonton, Alberta and began farming there. Apparently he didn't like the land and requested a change. Ultimately settling in Youngstown, Alberta near Calgary. He had 12 children with his wife Mecalson-1 Ida Mecalson (some born in the USA and some in Canada) Family stories suggest he didn't spend much time at the family farm. Opal Aarsby, his youngest daughter saw him only 2 times in her life. Once when she was 5 years old and the last time when she was about 12 or 13 years old, and the only thing he said to her was that she looked terrible in red (she had put on her best clothes to see him, a red dress). In 1922-1923 we see him living at the Aarsby farm he ran with his brother in North Dakota in 2 newspaper articles. One where someone tried to ruin their threshing machine and another when the barn burned. He did return home again sometime after Opal left home (she married in 1941 and moved to Ontario) when he had fallen ill. He remained there until his death in 1944. ==About== Name: ;Martin (Marthinis) Jensen Aarsby. Born;19 Jan 1873. Aarsbyeie, Østre Toten, Oppland, Norway.
