We don't know much about what she did in those initial years in Canada, she may have been working as a maid. And, sometime before 1909, she met Frank Beer. It's unclear how much she knew about her soon to be husband. He was still married to his wife [[Bennett-27787

Frank was a baggage man working for the railroad and often traveled on the ships crossing between England and Canada as they were connected with the Canadian Railway services. His wife had Huntington's disease and for some reason, he must have made the decision to leave her behind and start over in a new country.

In 1924 she had her last child, [[Beer-1595
Dorothy Josephine Beer]] who they lovingly called Dolly. Dolly was born with [https://www.wikiwand.com/en/Down_syndrome Downs Syndrome], a genetic disorder caused by the presence of all or part of a third copy of chromosome 21. At the time, it was believed to be caused when a mother was aging, but it's now known the risk is relatively similar in a 20-year-old woman, or a 45-year-old woman.

''In the 20th century, many individuals with Down syndrome were institutionalized, few of the associated medical problems were treated, and most people died in infancy or early adulthood. With the rise of the eugenics movement, 33 of the then 48 U.S. states and several countries began programs of forced sterilization of individuals with Down syndrome and comparable degrees of disability. Action T4 in Nazi Germany made a public policy of a program of systematic involuntary euthanization.'' '''Down's Syndrome History'''David Wright (25 August 2011). Downs: The history of a disability: The history of a disability. Oxford University Press. pp. 104–108. ISBN 978-0-19-956793-5. [https://books.google.com/books?id=0FMKNv_ALRYC&pg=PA200 Archived from the original] on 28 May 2013. Retrieved 25 August 2020.

At the time, Dolly would have been called cretin, imbecile, or Mongoloid, the terms commonly used in Canada for the syndrome until sometime in the 1960s. Most children born with Down's Syndrome were put into institutions almost immediately after birth and often died in childhood or early adulthood. Institutions in this era weren't a pleasant place to be, especially if you were considered an "imbecile", so it's great to know that Lena was able to keep Dolly at home with her.

In 1931 when she was 46 both of her parents passed away, within 3 months of each other. It must have been very difficult for her to be so far away from her family. She hadn't seen them for 20 years.
====Later Life====Her grief would have been compounded by the very difficult times occurring in Canada and the rest of the world.
''The Great Depression of the early 1930s was a worldwide social and economic shock. Few countries were affected as severely as Canada. Millions of Canadians were left unemployed, hungry, and often homeless. The decade became known as the Dirty Thirties due to a crippling drought in the Prairies, as well as Canada’s dependence on raw material and farm exports. Widespread losses of jobs and savings transformed the country. The Depression triggered the birth of social welfare and the rise of populist political movements. It also led the government to take a more activist role in the economy.'' '''Great Depression 1930''' Struthers, James. "The Great Depression in Canada".
